Im off to the LA County Fair shortly. Going to the Fair is one of the silly little things i do with my life to keep "Little Jimmy," alive and vibrant.
I don't do rides or the Fun Zone at the Fair. I go see the 4H animals, drink goat milk and watch the milk production demonstration in the barns. And, when i'm done with that, i walk over, kick tires on new tractors and drool over the selection of new boats. the home arts Pavilion, with its baking contests, preseves, floral decorations anad rich aromas is another big attraction for me. Somehow, along the way, I find time to go see funky demonstrations of wierd kitchen gadgets and then go to the petting zoo.
But one of the favorite things Little Jimmy does in adulthood is go watch the thoroughbreds run. My very favorite place to do this is in the racetrack infield. i love to get next to the guard rail and listen to the thunder of the pack as it streaks by. Making eye contact with a race horse as it stretches out and races by is something I wish i could paint. Truth is: I love horses and one of the most enjoyable things i've done as prt of my stroke recovery program was to take a couple of equatation classes down here in urban San Diego.
At the Fair I bet on horses, I'll throw $20 away at the betting windows, spend $5 on a hot dog and a coke, and stash the memory away, where I draw on it's interest for a year, until the La County Fair opens again, next year.
