Although word on the street this weekend is that IDG may soon stop the print version of InfoWorld, it’s not the only publication that’s facing the ax. There’s no shortage of rumors from within the surviving Ziff Davis organization on what looks like the dim future of several of its titles.
Right now there’s a big surplus of resumes from Ziff Davis editorial people hitting desks at Fortune, Forbes Business 2.0 and a variety of web-based news outlets. One editorial manager at an on-line business mag outlet says “we can pick and choose the best of Ziff’s stable, but we’re not hiring.”
Some of the titles where Ziffers say they are worried about losing their jobs include Baseline, CIO Life, eWeek, and even the long time powerhouse, PC Mag.
Increasingly, current Ziff Davis management appears to be shopping individual titles to surviving publishing companies, few of which appear to be interested in a package deal.
So, maybe the dead tree technical publishing model is blighted.
Hell, it was doomed to become a war over toaster-like appliances and plumbing supplies anyway.
One final question, is it a safe bet that Intel and AMD will invest millions of dollars in a dynamically changing market? I don't think so.
I’m glad I’m retired, but there are days when I fondly remember chasing stories.
Oh, one more thing. Whatever happened to the PC2 and that multi-tasking version of Dos 4.0? I’m so glad that wasn’t my name on those stories—Jim Forbes, 03/24/2007/
