Acer’s Spin 514 Plus Chromebook Built like a Tank and with horsepower to churn through digital maps and other graphics
I’m a very bad hospital patient, as I learned late this summer after I was hospitalized after two months in a hospital//rehab facility. When my body “said “enough.” on a hot 102 degree day as I hauled 200 pounds of trash to the pickup point one-quarter mile from my hillside hovel
I have a definite morning routine: Get up turn on my computer, read Forbes.com, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and the WSJ. Break the routine and I’m not a happy camper!
So imagine how out of sorts I was when three days into my never-ending hospital stay both of my laptops croaked. The first one to die was an Asus/ryzen 5 15 incher followed by my HP . Ive never had much success with Asus laptops-- Ive returned two because of bad video displays, so now they’re on my “Hell List.”
Acer is a different story. My Acers have never let me down, although I did have a co-conspirator smuggle a can of aerosol contact cleaner into my hospital room to use on my Spin5 which immediately restored my trusty machine to working order.
Acer’s 514 Chrome Book Plus has a responsive 14-inch touch screen 8gb of system memory, a 512gb ssd and weighs 3.14 pounds. It measures 12.87 x-0.81x 8.86 and runs google’s Chrome OS and google artificial intelligence software.
The Spin5 is built like a tank. This is a great thing since I’m as rough on computers as I am on watches. Most of the time my Spin5 lives in a padded backpack, since Im off grid in the two gold prospecting regions here in California, (with my notebook tethered to my phone
The other reasons I like this Acer notebook are because of its bright screen, which works well in dimly lit campsites or shady motel rooms. Its performance is well above average and its video has the horsepower to chew through the digital maps I keep on an external drive in my search to find and interview contemporary gold prospectors for a book I want to write about them.
Spin 514 is a versatile, powerful convertible chromebook with enough tilt in its screen for me to work with digital maps. Having gone through several Microsoft Surface notebooks, the 514’s fit and finish is reassuring.. the Acer Aspire spin 514 is priced more than other chromebooks, but my lengthy experience with Acer products is a comfort that that I can trust them to get the job done, whether Im camping streamside on the American River in NorCal, or ensconced on a rock in the desert, hurriedly writing up the day’s interview notes.
In all, Acer’s 514 plus has the torque to zip through complex documents, powerpoint presentations and everything I need to assemble the information I need to write about today’s gold and precious metal prospectors.
Because I’m handicapped and can’t write legibly, I take a portable computer everywhere I go.
The only thing more I’d like to see from Acer is a qualcomm Snapdragon powered of this or any forthcoming 16 inch portable.

The battery life of the Spin5 is an astounding 12 hours, better than most other machines and its WUXGA graphics and 14 inch screen, coupled with an AMD Ryzen3 processor and 8 Gigabytes of memory has the horsepower to multi-task and keep you running through the day.the 514 comes with Google Gemini, an AIi software tool. Having learned a lesson or two about the importance of great construction and “chug through the day” battery power, I'm completely happy with the Aspire 514 and have no reservations about recommending it to others,.
